A national project, built with partners at its scale

TEMCO is a National Development Plan 12 project on Special Economic Zone land, and Orange Botswana is its first corporate partner. The agreements that carry a regional hospital are being built now: institutional capital, corporate partners with national reach, clinical operators, and the referral networks that bring patients from across southern Africa.

What we are building, and who it is for

A 130-bed specialist hospital at the airport Special Economic Zone in Gaborone, opening in 2029 and planned around a catchment that reaches across southern Africa. It will carry the full range of care a major hospital provides, and above that the complex and rare work that today puts families on a plane to another continent, with mothers, newborns and children at the centre of it: maternity and high-risk pregnancy care (obstetrics), neonatal and paediatric intensive care for newborn babies and children, IVF and fertility treatment for women and for men, gynaecological cancers of the cervix and ovaries, and children's surgery. Every patient who lands in Gaborone instead of leaving the region is foreign exchange earned at home, and the hospital is counted as an export for that reason as much as it is counted as a health facility. Roughly 300 construction roles during the build and 740 permanent roles at full operation, with a specialist training pipeline behind them. Everything below is a real route in, at the stage the project is actually at.

Orange Botswana

Preferred connectivity provider to the TEMCO hospital development ecosystem.

Orange Botswana becomes the preferred connectivity provider to the TEMCO hospital development ecosystem at the Gaborone Airport Special Economic Zone. The memorandum covers connectivity and ICT for the planned hospital and for pharmaceutical manufacturing, including secure data management, telemedicine, digital health records and digital payment solutions, and it reaches across the wider zone to smart infrastructure, utilities monitoring and digital services for the enterprises operating there.

Clinical operations partner, working across the SADC region

An experienced clinical services group operating across the SADC region contributes clinical protocols, specialist staffing pipelines and structured training integration for the planned Centres of Excellence. The partnership supports the hospital's pursuit of the JCI accreditation pathway. It is an engagement for protocols, staffing and training, with no parent or equity relationship: TEMCO remains a Batswana-led project operated by Murua Home (Pty) Ltd.

Referring clinicians and specialist groups

If you look after patients who travel for structural-heart intervention, complex electrophysiology, robotic-assisted surgery or radiation oncology, or a mother whose pregnancy needs a unit with neonatal intensive care for newborn babies behind it, those are the cases TEMCO is built to keep in the region. Gaborone is about ninety minutes' flight from most of southern Africa, and referral here is a loop that brings your patient back to you, treated, with a full discharge summary and a follow-up plan, so continuity of care stays where it belongs.

Medical equipment and clinical technology

Medical equipment is the largest imported line in this project and it gets bought once, so we intend to take our time over it. A hospital treating patients who flew in for the appointment cannot have a linear accelerator or a ventilator for newborn babies standing idle waiting for a part, so the service position matters to us as much as the equipment, and a machine nobody can maintain in Gaborone is no use to anyone. Qualifying medical equipment enters the zone free of customs duty, which counts when you price. We are working through land allocation and pre-construction, which puts procurement some way ahead of us, and the relationships are worth starting now.

Engineering, construction and the trades

Engineering and architecture are delivered by the project's own in-house team, and procurement is shared with the contractors we work alongside. What has to be built is a working regional hospital: shielded oncology bunkers, theatres, intensive care for adults and for newborns, and a maternity unit that will take high-risk cases sent in from across the region. Packages go to market as the programme leaves pre-construction and the build begins, and the list we work from is being assembled now.

Clinical operations and institutional partners

TEMCO works with a clinical operations partner for protocols, specialist staffing pipelines and training integration, and the standard of care is set on the JCI pathway from the first day of operations. That standard has to hold at prices 25 to 35 per cent below South African private rates, so the institutions we want to hear from are the ones already running that kind of operation at volume. We are open to relationships that deepen clinical capability, referral pathways, women's and children's services, laboratory and diagnostic collaboration, or specialist service partnerships across the region.

Every route is planned work on a hospital that opens in 2029, and the delivery model is role-based: the project team leads and holds the decisions, with construction delivery and clinical operations contracted around it.

One thing we are asked often, answered here

We do not take equity positions in other healthcare facilities. Murua Home (Pty) Ltd is a project company formed to develop and operate a single hospital in Botswana, and that is the whole of its business, so proposals for us to invest into another clinic or group are outside what we are able to do. Referral relationships, specialist pathways and clinical collaboration are a different conversation, and a welcome one.
